MSFT: Unique Schedule

Curriculum | Unique Schedule | Center on Family Living

Friends University knows the sacrifice adult students make to complete graduate studies. The Master of Science in Family Therapy program uses a unique schedule to help individuals balance their personal commitments with the demands of graduate academic study and training.

Summer Intensive
The very first course of the MSFT program occurs during the first week of August. This course meets all day Monday through Friday. This intensive week provides an opportunity for students to have a concentrated time to develop relationships with other students and the MSFT faculty while being introduced to the field of marriage and family therapy.

Weekly Five-hour Class Blocks
Each week throughout the program, students meet from 5 to 10 p.m. on Thursday evenings. This creates a class period long enough for an effective mix of learning strategies. This schedule also allows students from farther distances to commute only one day a week for classes.

Consecutive Classes
Students take one academic course at a time, allowing students to concentrate on one subject at a time. Most courses last from six to eight weeks, depending on the credit hours. Plus, courses are arranged in a set sequence carefully designed to promote clinical readiness.

Clinical Training
Along with the five-hour course night, students also fulfill clinical training components in the program. In the first two semesters of the program, students take a clinical foundations course for 90 minutes on either Tuesday evenings or Thursday afternoons. Following the clinical foundations courses, students begin a three-semester internship experience. The internship experience normally requires 15 to 20 hours per week. The internship experience requirements include the following:

  • 1,000 hours of total professional experience that comprises:
  • 500 total hours of direct client contact
  • 250 of the above 500 hours required must be relational (i.e., two or more clients working on their relationship)
  • 50 hours of individual or dyadic supervision
  • 50 hours of small-group supervision
