Courses: Master of Health Care Leadership

MHCL 512 Leadership Excellence in Health Care
This course focuses on organizational structures and systems, development of values-based cultures, the art of successful acquisition approaches, and centralized and decentralized management and leadership styles. 3 hours

MBL 520 Legal Research and Writing
Develops skills in legal analysis, legal writing, and legal research through class assignments using various library and online resources, including cases, statutes, administrative regulations, legislative histories, digests, and legal encyclopedias, including specialized legal databases. 3 hours

MHCL 514 Management Information Systems in Health Care
This course investigates information technology and its managerial applications in health care organizations. The course discusses management of the systems development process; the organizational flow of information; database management concepts; and evaluation, selection, and strategic uses of information systems as well as security, audit and control of data. Health-care-specific case studies covering topics such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) and its impact on health care will be used. 3 hours

MHCL 516 Health Care Law and Ethics for the Health Care Leader
This course examines the coming wave of ethical issues related to mastery of the human genome and medical technology, which may dramatically extend quality and length of life. Legal focuses include liability crisis issues (including Medicare fraud), labor relations, contract law, health insurance issues, employment contracts, and current legal issues, including joint ventures between hospitals and physicians, Stark, not-for-profit, antikickback legislation, and other issues affecting the health care leader.3 hours

MHCL 518 Financial Management
This course covers the fundamental tools and concepts of finance in health care. The class covers insurance reimbursements. Additionally, ratio analysis, financing vehicles, cash management, and controlling costs in a managed care environment are addressed. Contrasting views between profit and nonprofit are discussed. 3 hours

MHCL 522 Quality Management in Health Care Organizations
This course deals with managing quality from a patient-outcome perspective, as well as recognizing the Internet-based quality measures now available to the average consumer when selecting a health care provider. Regulatory oversight for many levels of health care is covered in this course, as well as quality and regulatory environments for aging services. Additionally, because many referrals to providers are based on word-of-mouth advertising, various customer service approaches in health care are covered. 3 hours

MHCL 520 Human Resource Management
This course introduces current human resource strategies within the current environment of decreased availability of clinical professionals, increased turnover rates, technology outpacing the number of skilled technicians, and unprecedented outsourcing levels. 3 hours

MHCL 524 Competitive Marketing Strategies in Health Care
This course focuses on understanding the methods of formulating, implementing, and controlling marketing management programs for strategies. The course develops creative problem-solving and decision-making skills for effectively using marketing management analytical tools to bring value to the consumer or insurance carrier and to attain an enduring competitive advantage for the health care provider. 3 hours

MHCL 603 Strategic Planning
This course integrates traditional business strategic-planning topics (strategic leadership, organizational development, strength and weakness profiling) with the innovation and technological enhancements emerging within the industry. Issues and relations with boards and governance of health issues are discussed. 3 hours

MHCL 605 Contemporary Issues in Aging Services
This course reviews the recent array of new models of care emerging for seniors. The course provides an overview of long-term care, assisted living, and congregate living industries preparing for the baby boomers. 3 hours

MHCL 607 Innovation and Leading Change
This course covers how leadership encourages innovation within an organization and then leads and manages the organization through the change process to effectively maximize the impact of new innovations. 3 hours

MHCL 609 Physician Practice and Joint Venture Management
This course provides an understanding of how physician practices are changing into full-service health providers and the challenges this creates for administrators. Additionally, the course discusses recognizing the current trends toward joint ventures between physicians and other health care providers, including health insurance issues and identifying the benefits and potential problems. 3 hours

MHCL 615 Guided Research/Capstone Project
Each student completes a 32-hour capstone project with an approved health care administrator. Capstone project formats are designed by the program director along with the student and the health care administrator. The student completes a comprehensive final project that incorporates research, course materials, and practical application learning. 3 hours
